This pulley is bolted to the crankshaft and is the drive the for the auxiliary belt. They feature a vulcanised rubber insert and due to this the assembly acts as a harmonic damper to aid removal of crankshaft vibration.
We are seeing a large number of these pulleys with worn inserts which inevitably leads to the pulleys failure and in most instances an expensive failed timing belt! It is advisable to change this pulley if there are any signs of the rubber insert being perished or any excess lateral movement on inspection.
